Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness

The Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness is described as being designed to discourage your dog from pulling in a simple and easy way. It’s a harness that goes around the dog’s body. It works by re-directing pressure through the front ring attachment. It applies slight pressure across your dog’s chest if they try to pull.

It’s made of nylon and is adjustable. It also comes in different sizes and different colors. I’m using the large on Barney.

This harness is something brand new that I’m trying. I’ve previously used the Gentle Leader head collar and quite like that but Barney’s agility trainer recommended I try this one out. The trainer says that she likes it more than head collars and attaching to the collar around the neck, because it’s less dangerous. Also, that you have more control over the dog.

Pro’s

- Easy to put on the dog.

- Yes, it does stop Barney from pulling.

- It’s also easier to get your dog to go the way you want to.
Barney will sometimes try the trick of lying down or just refusing to go where I want to. With the Easy Walk Harness, it doesn’t take much pulling to convince Barney that yes, where I want to go is the best way. : – )

- More control over the dog. If your dog starts lunging at other dogs like mine does, it’s much easier to gain control. I really like it for that.

- I don’t have to worry about hurting his neck because this goes around his body. He also doesn’t do his choking sound trick anymore. You know, where they start choking and sounding like they’re gagging and about to die because they’ve pulled on their leash too hard. If you’ve ever watched, “The Dog Whisperer” on tv then you’ll know that they’ll pull this trick even when they haven’t had any pressure on them at all. They’re trying to get their own way.

Con’s

- My dog, Barney, runs whenever he sees me pick it up. He does not like having it put on.

- For some dogs, like mine, it’s the sensation of having something over their chest will mean that the dogs resists sitting down or going up stairs when they’re wearing it. My agility trainer says that this is simply psychological and that he will get used to it.

- I find that Barney walks slower in it. This could be a pro or a con, depending on whether you like that or not.
